  • How I chose my business network

When I started my freelance writing business, I was clueless. Among all the mistakes I’ve made along the way, there’s one thing I got right. That was joining a business network.

Finding a business network was one of my first steps after launching my website and email address.

My choice was the right one – almost a decade later, I still attend meetings each month.

I was keen to network because I knew it worked. Before moving to North Lincolnshire, I had volunteered to help a business network with marketing.

As a mum to two small children, I needed a network that met during the day. As I searched, I found that most met over breakfast or in the evening.

I quickly struck gold when I discovered the Business Network South Humberside. The meeting started after the nursery run, with another bonus: a two-course lunch. After one email and a payment, I was on my way to Grimsby for my first meeting.

What stands out from my first meeting is how friendly and welcoming everyone was during open networking.

Although I felt a bit nervous when I sat down for lunch and round-the-table networking, my worries quickly eased. Everyone was warm, friendly, and genuinely interested in what I had to share.

The meal was a real treat for a mum who had spent the past three years grabbing quick bites while caring for babies and toddlers. It was refreshing to be out of the house, enjoying some adult conversation.

I left feeling energised to push on with my business plans. Deciding to join was easy.

I’ve been to other networks, and none have matched up for me. At the Business Network, there is no pressure to bring in referrals, nor worry of hard selling. We support each other and share advice and knowledge.

Educational seminars at the start of each event are always interesting, even if the topic does not relate to my work. These sessions broaden my knowledge and keep me up to date on changes in the business world. The seminars are also a great chance for members to share insights into their expertise.

The lunches are always delicious, and every venue is outstanding.

I’ve gained some work through the network, but more importantly, each meeting boosts my confidence. I’ve had the chance to deliver seminars, something I had never done before. I value the opportunity the network provides to share my expertise, exchange ideas, and learn from others. Each meeting also allows me to raise awareness of my business and my work to a wider audience.

As a sole trader, I work alone every day. It’s a treat to get out of the home office and spend time with other people. I enjoy meeting new people and catching up with others whom I can now call friends.

Every first Wednesday of each month is a day I genuinely look forward to. If you can get to North Lincolnshire, I would love to meet you at an event soon.
